Northshore Recovery High School

The Northshore Education Consortium, an educational collaborative of five cities and twelve towns, proudly announces the opening of the first Recovery High School in Massachusetts. This innovative program is designed to meet the needs of high school students who have had a history of substance abuse but have made a firm commitment to sobriety. Funded by the State Department of Public Health and local school districts, Northshore Recovery High School (NSRHS) will commence September 2006 initially accepting 20 students with the goal of growing to 45 students over the academic school year. Financial awards and assistance will be available for eligible students through The Levine Family Scholarship Fund.

Mission Statement:  Education, Community & Accountability
Providing sober students a high school environment that is free of alcohol and drugs while fostering an ethic of honesty and mutual respect, promoting accountability to oneself and to the community, and helping to prepare students for higher education, military service or employment.

Admission:
Students can be referred by schools, parents, courts/state agencies, drug & alcohol treatment agencies and residential programs. Referrals must be supported by the student’s local school district and students must interview with NSRHS team for admission. Final decision for student acceptance will reside with NSRHS. Students must be high school age and 30 days sober upon admission. They must have a recent diagnosis of a substance abuse disorder, committed to an individual plan of recovery and, along with their parents, must be willing to sign an accountability contract. Students from the Northshore Education Consortium’s seventeen member districts will receive priority for entrance but all students will be considered for admission based on their individual needs. Program Details:
  • NSRHS will align with Massachusetts State Standards, MCAS testing protocols and the course requirements of Northshore Education Consortium’s member school districts.
  • The school is not a special education alternative school however special education issues will be addressed by licensed staff.
  • A student will be eligible for graduation from their sending school district. The Principal of NSRHS will be responsible for coordinating requirements and credits needed for graduation with sending districts.
  • Students’ participation in their community high school’s academic or extra curricular activities will be on a case by case basis.
  • NSRHS will work closely with the court system for any students who are court involved.


Creating a Recovery community:

  • Students must have made a firm commitment to sobriety and be alcohol and drug free for at least 30 days prior to admission to the school. Students must also be committed to and actively working a valid individual program of recovery. This must be documented in a letter of support for the student from a professional directly involved in his or her treatment.

  • Supporting the recovery culture of NSRHS, students and their parents will be accountable to develop and maintain their own recovery plan.

Substance abuse counseling will be provided to students after school hours by an outside substance abuse treatment agency. NSRHS Guidance Counselor will be available for onsite support and referral recommendation and facilitation as needed.
