Celebrate our Future Event: The Road to Recovery
A Note from Our Special Event Committee Chair

The Northshore Education Consortium is an educational collaborative that has been serving uniquely challenged students and providing specialized services to North of Boston schools for 35 years. In April 2009, The Consortium used the theme "Celebrate Our Future" as the catalyst for attracting friends to a wonderful evening to raise funds for a variety of important initiatives that support and educate students- and their families- with a variety of special needs.

On April 29, 2010, at our Third Annual Fundraiser being held at the Royal Crowne Plaza Boston North Shore (formerly the Ferncroft), this year's theme will be "Celebrating Our Future- The Road to Recovery" The theme of Recovery expresses a few ideas: the beginning of spring, the beginning of recovery from the economic downturn and our 4 year anniversary for our national acclaimed Northshore Recovery High School, a program designed for students grades 9-12 who require academically embedded recovery supports. We will be honoring five members of the community who were innovators for and are supporters of the Recovery program over the years: Former Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, Former Superintendent Dr. Herb Levine, Senator Steven Tolman, Michael Botticelli, and Beverly Superintendent Dr. James Hayes.

We encourage you to join us for the event! If you are interested in sponsoring a table or attending our event in general, please contact Jeffrey Shwom in the development office at jshwom@nsedu.org.

On April 29, 2010, we will take good care of you and promise that you will leave that evening knowing that your support has positively benefited the Consortium's students. Let's do this together!

Sincerely,

Brad Hildt

Consortium Awarded $1 million Grant for Teaching American History
Starting in January, the Northshore Education Consortium will be able to access $1 million in federal grant money to provide additional resources and materials for teaching American History. Through the Teaching American History Bill brought to Congress by Senator Byrd in 2002, this grant will afford 45 teachers from our member districts the opportunity to improve their instruction of American History. The major focus of the grant will be on the Constitution of the United States.

The program is being facilitated by Dr. Peter Gibbon, a Senior Research Associate from Boston University's School of Education. Each of the participating teachers will receive a $2,500 stipend, free books, and appropriate professional development credits. As noted by Executive Director Bob Gass, "the grant is consistent with our strategic priority of a service provider to our member districts in a wider variety of curriculum areas." The grant has been awarded for three years and begins January of 2010. Check out the website at http://necamoreperfectunion.com/ for more information.
